The Best Friend Museum

The Best Friend of Charleston is
a full size replica of the first passenger service
train in the United States. The original was built
and running in 1830!
The Charleston Museum

Although not housed in its original building, this
is the countrys oldest museum, founded in 1773.
Its an eclectic mix of Charleston history and
memorabilia, from videos on the rice culture to pickled
snakes that shared tomb space with Egyptian mummies!
Two historic homes tours are included in the combo
ticket.
The City Hall Gallery

Free and open to the public, the gallery houses several
portraits of famous regional and national leaders.
The Confederate Museum

/ Open only on weekends
Containing flags, uniforms and other Confederate
memorabilia, the museum is run by the Daughters of
the Confederacy.
The Dock Street Theatre
- 135 Church Street / Charleston, SC / 843-720-3968
A lineage that dates back to one of the earliest
theaters in America, Dock Street is the home of the
Charleston Stage Company which performs plays and
performances throughout the year.
Drayton Hall -
3380 Ashley River Road / Charleston, SC / 843-769-2600/
Built between 1738 and 1742, Drayton Hall is considered
one of the best examples of Georgian-Palladian architecture
in America. It is the only Ashley River Plantation
to survive the Civil War. The special preservation
presentation shows the house unfurnished so that
all the architectural details are exposed which promotes
a greater appreciation for the structure to the visitor.
Gibbs Museum of Art - 135 Meeting Street

American works of art from the 1700s to the present
including paintings, drawings and prints. Views of
the city and South Carolinian notables are displayed
here as well as Japanese woodblock prints and traveling
exhibitions.
Karpeles Manuscript Museum

Charleston, SC / 843-853-4651/ One of seven
museums supported by David Karpeles, his huge private
collection rotates among the museums. Historic manuscripts
and writings from ancient Egypt to modern times are
housed here, one of the worlds largest collections
of its kind.
Patriots Point Naval &
Maritime Museum - 40 Patriots Point
Road / Mt. Pleasant, SC / 843-844-2727 This
is where one finds the USS Yorktown, the WWII aircraft
carrier and several other ships including the submarine
Clamagore and destroyer Laffey. A Medal of Honor
Museum is also on the grounds located at Charleston
Harbor.
Slave Mart Museum-
6 Chalmers St. / Charleston, SC / 843-724-7395
Presentations at this slave market offer a glimpse
into the lives of those sold at the auction block,
but it also displays examples of the African and
Caribbean influences in the local culture in art,
cuisine and music as well as an exploration into
the civil rights movement in the region.
Spoleto, USA, Festival
- Various locations around the city during May and
June / 843-722-2764/ Charlestons own
world renown festival of the arts, founded by local
citizens with the aid of impresario Gian Carlo Menotti
and Countess Alicia Paolozzi. This yearly celebration
is modeled after the original Italian Spoleto Festival.
